The executive editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer has resigned, The Guardian reports, following widespread protests against a headline he posted last week that was interpreted as suggesting equivalence between black lives and property damage.
Stan Wischnowski later apologized for his "horribly wrong" decision to use the words "Buildings Matter, Too," to head a column. Around 30 of the newspaper's staff stayed home from work for a day in protest, with a features editor stating that he was "sick and tired" of people making careless - and dangerous mistakes.
"We’re tired of shouldering the burden of dragging this 200-year-old institution kicking and screaming into a more equitable age," a letter signed by dozens of the Inquirer's employees read. "We’re tired of being told to show both sides of issues there are no two sides of."
