In a surprising development, the Tzedek Lenashim (Justice for Women) organization has come out in defense of the father of a get-refuser who has been unable to leave the country for years, on the dubious grounds that he is responsible for seeing that his son grants a get to his wife.

The Supreme Court had ruled that the father was to pay a fine of NIS 5,000 for every day that his son persisted in his refusal. The sum has now mounted to a total of more than a million shekels. "Has this actually achieved anything, other than publicity for the Court?" Tzedek Lenashim asked.

The fine was originally imposed by the Rabbinical Court of Tel Aviv-Yafo. "Instead of finding a real solution, the Court imposed ridiculous penalties," Tzedek Lenashim added. "In addition, they don't even target the right person. The bottom line is that this hasn't helped at all, which is extremely disappointing."
