The United Nations Security Council convened this evening for a closed debate on the Middle East.

At the opening of the debate, the EU ambassadors addressed the Council on the topic of the formation of the Knesset and expressed concern over Israel's intention to apply sovereignty to Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan Valley. A number of ambassadors argued that applying sovereignty without the consent of both parties would be a violation of international law.

"The UN envoy to the Middle East, Nikolay Mladenov, said that" Israel's annexation threats could be a devastating blow to the vision of the two-state solution."

Israeli's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, replied that "any decision on sovereignty will only be made by the Israeli government in coordination with the US administration."

"[PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas] needs to [enter direct negotiations with Israel] instead of triggering political terror. Abandoning [security] agreements with Israel will hurt the Palestinians more than it will Israel," Danon added.
