Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi spoke today with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Ashkenazi thanked Lavrov for his greeting on taking office, and said he looked forward to continued cooperation with Russia.

Ashkenazi added that he saw great potential in bilateral collaborations, including in the fields of economics, culture, science and the fight against the coronavirus.

The two discussed the challenges and opportunities in the international arena and addressed the need for an end to the Iranian presence in Syria.

Ashkenazi congratulated his counterpart on the 75th anniversary of the Red Army's victory over Nazi Germany, adding that Israel appreciated the role of the Red Army in the historic liberation campaign of the concentration camps.

The two agreed to meet as soon as the situation allowed, and maintain regular channels of communication.
