Human rights groups have criticized countries' use of Zoom to deliver death sentence verdicts in trials conducted remotely, due to efforts to control the spread of coronavirus.

A report in The Guardian mentioned two separate cases, one in Singapore and another in Nigeria. Whereas the accused in Nigeria was sentenced for murder, the man sentenced to death in Singapore was convicted of drug trafficking. Only the verdict was delivered via Zoom; apparently, no legal arguments were presented.

Singapore is one of only four countries in the world that imposes the death penalty for drug-related offences.
