According to recent research from the United Kingdom, around one in twenty people who contract coronavirus will experience long-term symptoms, The Guardian reports.
Professor Tim Spector of King's College London is a prominent epidemiologist and head of a research team that developed an app to track the epidemic. Around four million people are already using the app, from the UK and also the United States, and from the data they enter, a more complete picture of the virus is emerging.
According to Spector, around 200,000 people have reported symptoms that persist for as long as six weeks, and he believes that coronavirus can actually linger for much longer - up to three or more months.
"I’ve studied 100 diseases," Spector told The Guardian. "Covid is the strangest one I have seen in my medical career."
