Data provided by the US Labor Department shows that the number of people seeking unemployment benefits has risen to 36 million.
The data actually shows a slowdown in the rate of increase of new jobseekers, although the rate of increase of layoffs has risen to a level not seen since the Great Depression during the 1930s.
