Hundreds of Iraqis have gathered in central Baghdad to demonstrate against the government, Al Jazeera reports, just days after a new government was formed.
According to Al Jazeera's reporter, Simona Foltyn, "Protesters ... are demanding a complete overhaul of the political system," as well as better living conditions.
Iraq's new Prime Minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi - who was previously the country's spy chief - has promised to usher in a new era of justice, and to grant compensation to the relatives of more than 500 people killed in recent demonstrations.
Sinan Antoon, an Iraqi novelist, told Al Jazeera that, "The protests are against decades of corruption and criminality and against a political class beholden to foreign influence - and al-Kadhimi is an insider."
