France has reported 70 more deaths from the coronavirus on Sunday, its lowest daily toll since March 17, The Guardian reports.

The new data will be encouraging for the French government as it begins to emerge from its eight-week lockdown. "Our efforts during the lockdown worked and saved thousands of lives," a representative of the French Health Ministry stated, adding that caution was still required as the epidemic is still "active and evolving."

Lockdown regulations are set to be eased from tomorrow in "green" areas, whereas "red" areas such as Paris will remain subject to stricter guidelines until their numbers of new cases drop significantly.

So far, 26,380 people have died of Covid-19 in France, one of the highest figures in Europe.
