According to a report in The Guardian, Italy is reviewing its policies regarding releasing prisoners belonging to Mafia organizations to home arrest.

During March, as the coronavirus swept through Italy, the country's prisons erupted in riots by inmates who feared contracting the illness. Around 376 known Mafia members and drug dealers were released to house arrest and judges are apparently considering the release of a further 456, according to the Italian newspaper Repubblica. Among those released were the Cosa Nostra boss Francesco Bonura, and Franco Cataldo, both notorious for their crimes which include murder.

The public outcry at the release of these and others has caused the government to reconsider, and now all releases will be reviewed every two weeks to ensure that they were justified.
