Hotovely to NBA: Don't confuse politics and sport

Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely called on the NBA not to mix between sport and politics and to stop using the term "occupied territories" regarding Judea and Samaria.

A new website set up by the NBA for the 2018 All-Star Game in Los Angeles enables fans to vote for their favorite players. After the vote, fans are directed to a page where they are instructed to pick which country they are from. While the website lists Israel, it also lists "Occupied Palestinian Territories".

Hotovely said that "the term 'occupation' regarding lands which the Jewish people has had a connection to for thousands of years is adoption of Palestinian propoganda which does not reflect the international legal situation which confers clear rights to Israel in the region."

She added that "this week Ambassador Friedman asked the State Department to stop using the term occupied territory on Judea and Samaria, and an important soccer league like NBA should follow the American approach."
