President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela registered, Monday, to run for a third six-year term. The 57-year-old cancer survivor is an outspoken critic of Israel.
His principal opponent is 39-year-old Governor Henrique Capriles Radonski of the state of Miranda. Capriles, whose mother is Jewish and whose father was a Catholic of Sephardic Jewish ancestry, describes himself as a "fervent Catholic". Chavez launched an anti-Semitic attack against Capriles shortly after Capriles's win in the primaries in February.
