The European Union has decided not to pursue immediate tough sanctions against Syria in the United Nations due to a threat from Security Council members Russia and China to veto the motion. Instead, diplomats will suggest a watered-down version of their request in hopes of getting the council’s approval.
Britain, France, Germany and Portugal had led a campaign to slap sanctions on Syria in response to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s violent repression of protests against his regime.
