Opposition head Tzipi Livni met Wednesday with Noam and Aviva Shalit, parents of captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, at their request. Livni, formerly the Foreign Minister, told the Shalits that as someone who held a senior position in government at the time Gilad was kidnapped she sees herself as bearing responsibility for his safe return.
However, Livni declined to sign a petition the two had brought, explaining that she does not sign petitions as a matter of principle. She also explained that she does not make public statements regarding Shalit's plight, in order to avoid creating the impression that his safe return is a partisan issue.
