At least 1,100 people have been murdered in shootings in Karachi, Pakistan since the beginning of the year, according to a report released Tuesday by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. Many of those murdered were targeted in a war between rival criminal gangs.

The commission accused local politicians of getting involved in the gang warfare by taking sides, and declining to crack down on the violence.

The violence is much more severe than that reported in 2010, when 775 people were killed in shootings or bombings over the course of the entire year.
