Tunisia's former president, Zine El Abidine Ben-Ali, was convicted of embezzlement and robbery for stealing $27 million in jewels and cash that were found in one of his palaces. His wife was convicted as well. The two were tried and convicted in absentia, and were sentenced to 35 years in prison each.

Ben-Ali denied the charges. Speaking through an attorney, he called the verdict “a shameful masquerade of the justice of the victorious.” Ben-Ali is in hiding in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi government did not respond for a request for extradition of Ben-Ali.
