A spokesperson for the Jordanian government denied that King Abdullah had been attacked earlier Monday on a tour of southern Jordan. Media reports said that Abdullah's motorcade had been ambushed by a large group, with threw rocks and stones at him and his entourage. The attack was said to have been confirmed by a member of Abdullah's staff.
Officials later denied that there had been an attack. Government spokesperson Taher Edwan told reporters that the report was “baseless. What happened is that a group of young Jordanians thronged the monarch's motorcade to shake hands with him.” When police pushed them away, he said, “there was a lot of shoving.”
