Former Supreme Court President Meir Shamgar is among the signatories on a public petition opposing a law limiting the Supreme Court's authority to declare laws unconstitutional. Versions of the law have been proposed by Minister of Justice Daniel Friedmann and some Knesset Members.
"Canceling a true judicial check endangers the liberties that have already been codified into laws," the petition said. "A move like this does not promote the rule of law but rather compromises it." The petition is an initiative of the Israeli Institute for Democracy.
