The “Coordinator for Government Activities in the Territories,” Major General Kamil Abu Rokun, announced Tuesday that the fishing area in the Gaza Strip would be reduced to six nautical miles until further notice.
The decision was made following the rocket fire last night from Gaza into Israeli territory. The rocket exploded at sea, several kilometers from shore.
IDF Spokesman Ronen Manelis said that Islamic Jihad was behind the rocket fire aimed at disrupting the agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Manelis reported that the shooting was carried out from the Al-Atatra neighborhood in the northern Gaza Strip. According to the IDF spokesman, Islamic Jihad has recently been trying to deteriorate the situation and carry out terror attacks without leaving a signature, as he puts it. The head of the northern Islamic Jihad district Baha Abu al-Ata is the one who is involved in the rocket fire and is behind the escalation attempt.
The IDF spokesman also said that despite the attempts in Gaza to present coordination between Hamas and Islamic Jihad, in practice there is no such coordination, and Islamic Jihad does not accept the leadership of Hamas. The IDF views Hamas as the sovereign in the Gaza Strip.
