A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.6 on the Richter Scale has hit central Italy north of Rome.

It is not yet clear what the extent of the damage is, and if there are any injured.

Italy is known as a land prone to earthquakes. This latest earthquake comes in the wake of two strong quakes just several days ago.

In August, Italy was hit with a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that claimed the lives of 296 people.
