Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met on Sunday with the Shas party’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.
A meeting between the two is held annually during the Sukkot holiday, but was postponed this year due to the implementation last week of the deal to release Gilad Shalit.
During the meeting, Netanyahu thanked the rabbi for his support and assistance in approving the Shalit deal. Rabbi Yosef had told Shas ministers to vote in favor of the deal and asked Interior Minister Eli Yishai to persuade other Cabinet ministers to vote in favor of it.
Rabbi Yosef praised Netanyahu for achieving the Shalit deal.
“G-d is with you, in everything you do,” he told Netanyahu. “Just as you did with Gilad Shalit. You did well, you did a good deed. There are those who oppose, I know, but if something has no opposition at all – that’s a sign that it’s wrong.”
Rabbi Ovadia also wished the prime minister a happy new year and congratulated him on his 62nd birthday which was celebrated on Sunday.
