Disturbance at Southern Prisons after Inmate Death

Disturbances were reported, Tuesday morning, at a number of prisons in southern Israel, following news of the cancer death of security prisoner Maisara Abu-Hamdiyeh at Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva'. Prisoners were beating doors and throwing things from their cells.

Abu-Hamdiyeh was awaiting early release due to his deteriorating condition. Palestinian Authority (PA) officials blamed Israel for his death, according to Agence France Presse, which quoted the PA's Prisoner Club as saying there were 25 other cancer patients among PA prisoners in Israel.
