Hamas Inmate at Eshel Prison Dies of Cancer

Maisara Abu-Hamdiyeh, a 64-year-old Hamas member from Hevron, died of cancer, Tuesday at Soroka hospital in Be'er Sheva'. He had been serving a life sentence in the city's Eshel Prison following a 2002 arrest on charges of attempted murder.

Agence France Presse reports that Abu Hamdiyeh began complaining of throat problems about nine months ago and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. A statement by the Israel Prisons Service (IPS) said, "About a week ago, after being diagnosed as terminal, the IPS appealed to the release committee to secure his early release, a process which had been started but not yet concluded."soner, who was serving a life sentence in an Israeli jail, died of throat

cancer on Tuesday, the head of the Prisoners Club said. He was 64.
