Gregory Shamis, 75, was found and rescued this morning by the Israel Dog Unit, a nonprofit specializing in search and rescue. He had been missing from his house for two full days.
Gregory was reported missing from his home in Ashkelon on Monday. He suffers from Alzheimer's disease and had lost his way, and began wandering around the city.
IDU director Yekutiel Ben-Yaakov told Israel National News that Gregory apparently returned to his old home, but took a wrong turn, and proceeded several miles in the wrong direction.
"We found him literally feet before the entrance into a rough wooded area. With the intense heat over the past few days, his confusion and misdirection, it is unlikely that he would have lasted much longer. Thank G-d we found him just in time."
