The chairman of the Israeli delegation of the Knesset to the International Parliamentary Organization (IPU), MK Danny Danon, was elected today in a secret ballot by representatives from 47 countries, to serve as a member of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the IPU. MK Danon ran against representatives from Spain, Holland and Sweden.

The IPU conference in Bahrain was held with the participation of the King of Bahrain and heads of parliaments from around the world.

After his election to the post, MK Danny Danon said: "I am particularly pleased that Israel’s delegation to the IPU was able to bring about a significant achievement for the State of Israel at its very first meeting of the IPU. I am proud to be taking part in leading the advocacy efforts of the State of Israel's security policy in the international arena. My election by many world countries to this post is firm recognition of the challenges Israel faces in this regard as well as our extensive know-how and capabilities in the fight against terrorism. I intend to draw on my experience as Israel’s former ambassador to the United Nations and the knowledge that the State of Israel has acquired on the subject for the benefit of the international community."

The Israeli delegation is taking part in the 146th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the largest inter-parliamentary organization in the world incorporating 178 member parliaments including the Knesset.

The Counter-Terrorism Committee of the IPU usually meets several times a year, to discuss global terrorist attacks and means to combat terrorism on an international scale. Its members are representatives from the houses of representatives of 14 countries.
