A man was killed in northern Israel Tuesday morning, after he was struck by a train on an Israel Railways line near the coastal city of Haifa.
The incident occurred in the Hof Hacarmel region south of Haifa along Israel’s northern coastline, outside of Kibbutz Hahotrim.
The man was struck by a northbound train while walking over the railroad tracks on the line between Hahotrim and Bat Galim. He was killed instantly. Tirat Hacarmel police say the man killed in the accident was declared dead at the scene.
As a result of the accident, the rail line was temporarily closed to traffic, causing disruptions in the greater Haifa area. Israel Railway’s Atlit station south of Haifa was closed Tuesday morning because of the accident, and buses used to transport commuters left stranded by the closure.
