Several Moroccan parliamentarians verbally assaulted MK Amir Peretz (Zionist Union) during a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.
During a conference in Morocco on Sunday, a local member of parliament representing the Islamic movement lashed out at Peretz and screamed: "You are a war criminal! You are not welcome here!" Several other parliamentarians joined in.
Former Israeli MK Majalli Wahabi, a Druze politician who served in the Likud, Kadima and Hatnuah parties, came to Peretz's aid and answered the Moroccon MPs: "You represent radical Islam. Those who are attempting to destroy Morocco cannot criticize anyone who was born here."
After the confrontation, the representative of the Moroccan parliament at the event apologized to Peretz and stated that the MPs who attacked him represented only a vocal minority who did not represent the prevailing opinion in Morocco. He added that Peretz is not only a welcome guest but a person who wants to promote peace.
MK Peretz serves as the Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, which includes representatives from a variety of countries from the Middle East and North Africa.
