A Canadian man has been arrested under the country's anti-terrorism law, police said on Saturday, according to Reuters.
The man, 23-year-old Kevin Omar Mohamed, was taken into custody with a "preventive arrest" under the Fear of Terrorism Offense section of the law, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement quoted by the news agency.
Police said the arrest was not linked to the recent attacks in Brussels and there was no indication of a domestic attack.
Mohamed's lawyer, Anser Farooq, said Mohamed was arrested on Friday and appeared in court in Brampton, west of Toronto, on Saturday.
The lawyer added that the arrest was triggered on the basis of allegations that his client was planning to go overseas to pursue terrorism, though he noted his client had not been charged with this.
He did not say who made the allegations, noted Reuters.
According to the police statement, Mohamed was only charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace. Farooq said the weapon in question was a knife.
Canada was targeted by a terrorist attack recently, when a Muslim man stabbed two Canadian soldiers at a recruitment center in Toronto. The two soldiers were wounded but did not suffer life threatening injuries.
The stabber, 27-year-old Ayanle Hassan Ali, who was born in Montreal and moved to Toronto in 2011, later said that “Allah” told him to carry out the attack.
There have been two other terrorist attacks on Canadian forces recently. In October of 2014, a terrorist shot and killed a soldier near the Canadian parliament in Ottawa.
That attack came a week after a 25-year-old who converted to Islamrammed his car into two soldiers in the Quebec town of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and was shot dead by police. One of the soldiers later died.
Last month, Canada arrested 60 people who returned to the country after having joined foreign terrorist groups such as the Islamic State (ISIS).
