The Knesset Finance Committee on Tuesday approved an initiative of Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud), which called to ban the import of fireworks of the type repeatedly used by Arab rioters to fire at police.
Experiments that were conducted proved that at a certain range and with a certain diameter the fireworks can inflict serious and even fatal wounds.
"This is an additional step in the spectrum of steps I'm leading to fight the phenomena of terror in Jerusalem in particular and the state of Israel in general," claimed Erdan.
"The Palestinians shoot these fireworks directly at the security forces, something which is life-threatening, and therefore I acted to change the orders on opening fire to allow the security forces to harm those who shoot fireworks, in addition to the ban on their import," said Erdan.
Last November the Legal Advisor for the IDF's Judea and Samaria Division gave the order to allow soldiers to open fire at firework shooting rioters if their lives were in danger.
Arab rioters have used the fireworks to attack kindergartens in Jerusalem, as well as to attack police on the capital city's Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism.
