It probably couldn't happen in any other country in the world.
But in a small town in Alaska, residents got so fed up with the quality of their candidates 15 years ago, they held a write-in campaign for a kitten.
"Stubbs” won that race and became the mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, CNN reported Tuesday. The furry politician has led the town to glory ever since, residents say, with a popularity rating rarely enjoyed by human competitors.
"He doesn't raise our taxes,” explained Lauri Stec, manager of Nagley's General Store, which doubles as the mayor's office. “We have no sales tax. He doesn't interfere with business. He's honest.”
The caramel-colored feline reportedly prefers his water solely from a wine glass, flavored with a touch of catnip.
A massive tourist attraction, Stubbs brings in big business for the town, home to only 800 people. His Mayor Stubbs Facebook page has garnered more than 8,000 "subscribers" and has too many pending "Likes" for the social networking site to keep up with.
The president of the town's Chamber of Commerce, Andi Manning, notes that residents have no problem keeping Stubbs in office. Talkeetna is a “historical district,” hence the office of mayor is one that is more symbolic than functional, Manning explained.
