In light of the twin truck-bombing of British targets in Turkey four days ago, the remarks last year of a bereaved Israeli family member take on extra import. Chen [pronounced khen, meaning "grace"] Keinan, who lost her mother and 1-year-old daughter in a terrorist bombing in Petach Tikvah in June 2002, spoke with CNN at the time and delivered a foreboding warning. Addressing herself to the European audience, she said,

"I think Israel is like the canary in the coal mine. We in Israel are dying now; we are slaughtered on a daily basis, but - you're next. You're next, buddies! Because, I understand that you have a lot of Muslim minorities, and that's OK, everybody should live where he wants - but you are appeasing terrorism! And you hope that if you tolerate it, and try to understand its motives, and you give it reasons, whatever they are... I ask the Europeans: Do not tolerate murder! I don't want to use [the word] terrorism, because it's banal. Do not tolerate murder, do not appease the terrorists! Not for oil, and not because you're scared - because the more fear you show, the faster it's going to be on your doorstep - and then, G-d help you, because you gave it legitimacy."

Education Minister Limor Livnat has a similar warning for some European countries. Asked to comment on the most recent murderous attacks in Turkey, Livnat told Ynet,

"This is part of radical Islam, which wants to destroy the West in the attempt to have Islam rule the entire world... Anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism stem from the same source as [those who are] anti-the-whole-free-world. Even some of the extreme left here in Israel are beginning to understand that our conflict is not just over land or borders. Even if we solve the land problem, it won't be over - because the goal of radical Islam is to erase the State of Israel and the Western world from the map.

"In my estimation, an attempt to kill citizens of the free Western world - including European countries that are considered sympathetic to the Moslem world such as France and Belgium - is just a matter of time. I am totally convinced of this. It could be a few days, or 2-3 years, but it will happen."

Asked if this situation might impact Europe's generally critical attitude towards Israel, Minister Livnat said,

"There is much hypocrisy here. The Americans criticize us relatively moderately regarding the partition fence and the 'humiliation of Palestinians' - but they themselves, in the name of security, humiliate innocent citizens without shame. The Americans allow themselves to do this constantly and regularly ever since 9/11 in order to protect their citizens. Even they, despite their friendship with us, are tainted with a measure of hypocrisy - and the Europeans all the more so. I don't have any special expectations."

Interestingly, the Keinan family announced this week that it had filed suit against the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian Legislative Council for damages of 230 million shekels. The family, represented by Atty. Ronald Roth of Jerusalem, claims that the suicide terrorist committed the murders according to a diplomatic program arranged and approved by the PA, in an "initiative that is well known and requires no evidence to prove it. The perpetrators were members of Palestinian terrorist organizations established by the PA and the PLC and that operated according to a clear policy of methodical use of violence and terrorism against innocent Israeli citizens... The PA and PLC commit acts of incitement to genocide... The use of terrorism waves against citizens is a crime against humanity."
