The first group of Jews ascended the Temple Mount Sunday, 70 days after the holy site was closed to Jewish visitors due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The mount was opened to Jews at the same time as most of the restrictions on Muslims entering and praying in the area were lifted this morning.
Hundreds of Muslim worshipers had already arrived this morning at the Al-Aqsa Mosque after two and a half months in which the Temple Mount's gates were closed.
During the last 70 days, only a few dozen Muslim Waqf workers were allowed to enter the Temple Mount and pray there.
Faced with discrimination, Temple Mount activists Yehuda Etzion and Arnon Segal recently aubmitted petitioned to allow them to bring a small group of Jews up to the Temple Mount, but their demand was rejected by the Supreme Court.
Last night, the Temple Mount organizations issued a statement saying, "The head of the Temple Mount visitors was informed by the police that, with the reduction of the coronavirus regulations on the Temple Mount, it would be restored and open to visits, probably this Sunday."
