Hostages were taken in a supermarket in southern France Friday, and a police officer shot in two separate incidents.

The shooting incident took place in the town of Carcassonne, a 15-minute drive from the scene of the hostage situation in the town of Trebes. Authorities confirmed that a gunman had opened fire at a group of four officers, and that one officer had been wounded in the attack.

A source told France Info that the four officers were jogging at the time of the shooting, and all were unarmed.

"They threw themselves to the floor but one of them was hit in the shoulder," the source said.

In a separate incident, a shooter burst into a supermarket in a nearby town and opened fire before taking hostages.

A gunman "entered the Super U supermarket at around 11: 15 a.m. and shots were heard," a source told AFP. The gunman reportedly yelled “Allahu Akbar” as he opened fire.

Police say multiple gunmen were involved in the two incidents.

French authorities say the ISIS terror group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. One of the shooters has claimed allegiance to ISIS, AFP has reported.

Local police have cordoned off the area surrounding the supermarket, urging residents to avoid the area. Police special weapons teams have been deployed to the scene of the hostage situation.

According to the French media outlet La Dépêche du Midi, one person has been killed in Trebes supermarket, while The Local reported that two people have been killed.

Roughly 20 people were able to escape the supermarket since the beginning of the hostage situation.
