The secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization said US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital Wednesday destroys any hopes for a two-state solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

"He destroyed the two-state solution," Saeb Erekat, who long served as the Palestinian Authority's top negotiator, told journalists after Trump's speech.

Trump "disqualified his country from any role whatsoever" in the peace process, he said.

"As a chief Palestinian negotiator, how can I sit with these people if they dictate on me the future of Jerusalem as Israel's capital," he added.

Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas echoed Erekat's sentiments.

"These deplorable and unacceptable measures deliberately undermine all peace efforts," Abbas said in a speech following the president's remarks.

He added that Trump's speech signaled "an announcement of US withdrawal from playing the role it has been playing in the past decade in sponsoring the peace process."

“These measures represent a reward to Israel for denying agreements and defying international legitimacy and encourages it to continue the policy of occupation, settlement, apartheid and ethnic cleansing.”

The Hamas terrorist organization also condemned Trump's decision and said that the move "open the gates of hell" on US interests in the region.

"This decision will open the gates of hell on US interests in the region," Ismail Radwan, an official with the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip told journalists after Trump's announcement.

He called on Arab and Islamic states to "cut off economic and political ties with the US embassy and expel American ambassadors to cripple" Trump's decision.
