Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas gunman who opened fire on a crowd of thousands of concertgoers at a country music festival outside of the Mandalay Bay resort, killing 58 and wounding hundreds, fired some 200 rounds at a hotel security officer before engaging in the worst mass shooting incident in American history.

Jesus Campos, a security officer at the Mandalay Bay hotel where Paddock was staying, suffered repeated gunshot wounds the evening of the deadly massacre as he approached Paddock’s 32nd story hotel room.

It was initially believed, however, that Campos had been wounded after Paddock had already opened fire on concertgoers.

On Monday evening, however, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said investigators had revised their timeline of events, saying that Paddock had apparently opened fire on Campos a full six minutes before the mass shooting.

Police say Paddock, who had installed three security cameras to monitor the hallway outside of his room, spotted Campos as the security officer approached Paddock’s room. Campos had reportedly heard drilling in Paddock’s room, and was investigating the unusual noise.

As Campos approached, Paddock threw open the door and fired some 200 rifle rounds, hitting and wounding Campos multiple times.

Six more minutes elapsed between the end of Paddock’s shooting in the hotel hallway on the 32nd floor and the 10-minute shooting spree from his hotel room balcony aimed at the concertgoers below.
