Israel's Supreme Court has decided to boycott the official state event marking 50 years of settlement in Judea, Samaria, the Jordan Valley, and the Golan on Wednesday in Kfar Etzion.

Supreme Court President Miriam Naor ordered Justice Neal Hendel to cancel his scheduled attendance at the celebration after deciding that the event was political in nature, Channel 10 reported. The decision was conveyed in a letter to MK Isawwi Frej (Meretz), who had asked the court to qualify whether they would attend.

"A few weeks ago, Supreme Court President Justice Miriam Naor was requested to participate in the event, or to send a representative on her behalf," read the missive. "Justice Neal Hendel was asked by President Naor to represent the judiciary at the event."

"We received a detailed invitation a few days ago, and after closer examination, it was decided that there was no basis to represent the judicial branch at the event" the letter concluded.

Deputy Foreign Minister MK Tzipi Hotovely blasted the decision. "The Supreme Court President's decision to boycott the state event in Kfar Etzion is an outrage that scorns our national history" she tweeted. MK Bezalel Smotrich (Jewish Home) concurred, saying that "this is an official ceremony and the Supreme Court is disrespectful for not participating".

The Supreme Court is not the only ones refusing to attend the ceremony. The Zionist Union, the largest party in the opposition, decided to boycott the jubilee as well due to their "moral opposition." MK Eitan Cabel (Zionist Union) published a Facebook post in which he wrote that "no member of the Knesset from the Zionist Union should participate in the 'state ceremony marking the anniversary of the liberation of Judea and Samaria, the Jordan Valley, and the Golan Heights".

"The Prime Minister and the extreme right are leading us into the vast abyss of one state for two peoples, which will destroy the Jewish state," Cabel added.

Yesh Atid faction leader Yair Lapid also declined to attend and will send MK Chaim Yellin instead.

The European Union’s Ambassador to Israel, Emanuele Giaufret will also not attend the event, citing "longstanding EU policy".
