More than 200 ISIS terrorists were killed in a massive airstrike in Syria, Russia defense officials claimed on Monday.

Russian media outlets published the Russian Defense Ministry’s claims Monday that Russian warplanes had struck a massive column of ISIS forces outside of Deir ez-Zor, south of Raqqa, wiping out more than 200 ISIS fighters as well as military equipment.

"The Russian Air Force destroyed another large column of ISIS fighters that was heading to the area of the city of Deir ez-Zor, where international terrorists are trying to regroup and equip their last base in Syria," the Defense Ministry statement read in part.

“More than 200 militants” and “heavy vehicles with ammunition” were eradicated in the bombing raids, Russian officials claimed.

Defense officials declined, however, to specify the date of the airstrike. No independent confirmation of Russia's claims has yet been made.

Sergey Shoigu, Russia’s Defense Minister, hailed the airstrike as a “strategic defeat” for ISIS, RT reported.

“The defeat of ISIS in the Deir ez-Zor region will be a strategic defeat for the international terrorist group in the Syrian Arab Republic.”
