Iranian security forces have arrested members of a group linked to Islamic State (ISIS), which had planned bombings and suicide attacks in religious centers, Reuters reported Saturday, citing state television.

Intelligence Ministry agents "were able to arrest a group linked to Daesh that intended to carry out terror operations in religious cities ..., and (seized) explosive and suicide attack equipment," the television said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

It did not say how many suspected terrorists were held.

The arrests came days after Iranian Revolutionary Guards fired missiles from western Iran into eastern Syria, aiming at ISIS bases which had claimed responsibility for twin attacks that killed 18 people in Tehran on June 7.

Subsequent reports suggested that only one out of the seven missiles which Iran fired at ISIS targets in Syria had reached its target.

The ISIS attacks at Iran's parliament and near the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder exacerbated regional tensions.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said afterwards the raids would increase hatred for Saudi Arabia, the region's main Sunni power, and America.

Iran blamed Saudi Arabia for the attacks despite the fact that ISIS claimed them.

On Friday, it was Saudi Arabia which said its security forces had foiled a terror plot targeting the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

Security forces said the operation was planned by three terrorist groups, two based in Mecca and the third in Jeddah. The foiled attack targeted worshipers at the mosque, they added.
