The US military shot down an Iranian drone over Syrian airspace Monday, CNN reported.

A US F-15 fighter jet shot down the Iranian Shaheed-129 UAV drone as it approached a base where US troops train Syrian rebels near the Iraqi border, Fox News reported.

An official told CNN that the drone was shot down because it was “assessed to be a threat.”

The incident comes amid rising tensions between the US and Russia over the Syrian Civil War. Russia threatened to treat US and coalition aircraft as military targets following the downing of a Syrian military aircraft by an American plane.

“Any aircraft, including the international coalition’s planes and drones, discovered west of the Euphrates River, will be accompanied by ground and air-based anti-aircraft defenses as aerial targets,” Moscow said in a statement Monday.

US officials vowed to continue operations in Syria despite the Russian threats.
