Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis (Likud) on Monday cancelled a trip to Jordan which was scheduled for Tuesday, Channel 10 News reported.

Akunis was to participate in a ceremony in honor of the launching of an international particle accelerator in Jordan, which will be attended by King Abdullah, but sources in Jerusalem said he “cancelled his participation at the ceremony due to the tensions between the two countries.”

Those tensions began on Saturday, after Mohammad Abdullah Salim al-Kasji, a Jordanian citizen who was in Israel on a tourist visa, stabbed an Israeli police officer in the Old City in Jerusalem before being shot dead.

Jordan was outraged by the killing of the terrorist, and described it as “a terrible crime”.

Prime Minister Netanyahu later fired back, calling the Jordanian reaction “outrageous,” and saying Amman appeared to be backing terrorism.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Sunday replied to Netanyahu, saying his country's position opposing terrorism was "clear to everyone".

“Jordan is and was a voice of reason and peace. Our positions against violence and terrorism are clear to everyone,” Safadi said at a press conference in Amman with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, and PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat.
