According to a report in Haaretz, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has offered Zionist Union MK Tzipi Livni the post of UN Under-Secretary General, considered one of the UN’s most senior positions.

Livni also met with the Guterres several weeks ago regarding the proposition, according to the report.

Livni’s office has stated that she has not yet received an official proposal on the matter.

Although there are a number of Under-Secretary General for each Secretary General, the position is still considered prestigious, and Livni, if appointed, would be the first Israeli to fill the role. In any event, The appointment ultimately depends on the UN Security Council's approval, and the Security Council is not a big fan - to put it mildly - of Israel.

According to the report, Officials in the UN see the offer as Guterres’ attempt to forge a deal: the US will take back its opposition to the pick of PA official Salam Fayyad as head of the UN mission to Libya and, in return, Livni will be appointed.

It will be remembered that US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley blocked on Friday night PA leader Salam Fayyad’s appointment as head of UN mission to Libya out of a show of allegiance to Israel.

"For too long, the UN has been unfairly biased in favor of the Palestinian Authority to the detriment of our allies in Israel," she explained.

In turn, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon praised the US move.

"The new Administration proved once again that it stands firmly alongside the State of Israel in the international arena and in the UN in particular,” he said. “The new administration is working towards the joint interest of the United States, Israel and the special alliance between our two nations.”

‏"This is the beginning of a new era at the UN, an era where the US stands firmly behind Israel against any and all attempts to harm the Jewish State," Danon concluded.
