Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump softened his tone on his general election opponent, Hillary Clinton, wishing her a quick recovery after the former Secretary of State reportedly fainted during a 9/11 memorial ceremony in Manhattan on Sunday.
Trump did not challenge the Clinton campaign’s claim she was dehydrated while suffering from pneumonia.
“I really just don’t know. I hope she gets well soon,” Trump told CNN on Monday. “I don’t know what’s going on.”
But the real estate mogul did note that Mrs. Clinton had been suffering from a lingering cough over the past week, suggesting it may have also been related to pneumonia.
“I see what I see. The coughing fit was a week ago, so I assume that was pneumonia also. I mean I would think it would have been. So something’s going on but I just hope she gets well and gets back on the trail we’ll be seeing her at the debate.”
About an hour and a half into Sunday’s memorial for the 2001 9/11 attacks, Clinton reportedly suffered what one law enforcement official described to Fox News as a “medical episode”, while two other witnesses said she fainted.
A video showing the Democratic nominee stumbling and being carried into a van in the middle of the ceremony has raised new questions regarding Mrs. Clinton’s health, following months of efforts by the Clinton campaign to quash rumors the former First Lady is suffering from some serious medical condition.
