Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home) and Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan are set to meet with Facebook executives today in Tel Aviv as part of an ongoing effort to reach an agreement regarding the censorship of certain words, phrases, and content used by inciters targeting Jews and the State of Israel.
Ministers Shaked and Erdan have called upon Facebook to censor the use of words like “Intifada”, “stabbings”, “Nazis”, and “holy martyrs” when used to incite terrorism.
Yediot Ahronot reports that Facebook has begun to remove words that it identifies will provoke violence according to a series of algorithms it has developed. These censors remove calls for murder, kidnapping, or other crimes and praise for anyone who commits an act of terror.
Even with these censors in place, Facebook can still host clear and open calls for users to become martyrs and instructional videos that give detailed guidelines about how to commit a terrorist attack. The site also hosts clips of training exercises in mosques that incite murder and terror.
Participants in today’s meeting will include Facebook’s Vice President of Global Public policy, Joel Kaplan and a Former Deputy Chief of Staff for the White House, Monika Bickert.
