Footage released by opposition forces in Syria has again captured the attention of the West, going viral on social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook.

The video, taken of five-year old Omran Daqneesh, shows the child in an ambulance after he was recovered from the rubble of a building destroyed in a recent air raid in the northern Syrian town of Aleppo.

Bloodied and covered in dust, the images of Daqneesh have drawn parallels to pictures of Alan Kurdi, a three-year old Kurdish child from Syria who drowned in the Mediterranean last September.

Photographs of Kurdi’s body on a Turkish beach drew worldwide attention to the refugee crisis, and was instrumental in the policy shift in many Western countries vis-à-vis Syrian and Iraqi refugees.
