Two female police officers have been wounded in a stabbing attack in the Belgian city of Charleroi, south of Brussels. Their injuries are not life threatening.

The attack reportedly occurred outside a local police station.

The assailant shouted "Allhu Akbar" before embarking upon the attack, indicating Jihadist motives, but Belgian authorities have refrained from referring to the stabbing as a terror attack as of yet.

Belgian prime minister Charles Michel said “preliminary indications” indicated the attack was an act of terrorism, but that authorities are still collecting information, according to the AP.

"My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the police. We are following the situation closely," Michel said.

The attacker was shot by a 3rd officer, and subsequently died of the wounds, according to the BBC.

No more information is yet available on the attacker.

Belgium has been on edge due to the rising terror wave in Europe, and especially so since the March 22nd attack in Brussels, in which 32 people were killed and many more injured in an airport terminal and metro station.

Charleroi itself was used as a base for some of the terrorists who were involved in the Brussels attack and the Paris attacks last November.
