An Egyptian Muslim man who threatened to kill Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will leave the US of his own accord this week, his lawyers say.

23-year-old aviation student Emadeldin Elsayed was arrested in February by US Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) agents, after posting an article about Trump on Facebook, along with the comment: "I literally don't mind taking a lifetime sentence in jail for killing this guy, I would actually be doing the whole world a favor."

One day after posting the status on February 3, Secret Service agents called him in for questioning and searched his property and phone. They then arrested him less than two weeks later.

His lawyer, Hani Bushra, told the Reuters news agency that Elsayed had agreed to leave the US voluntarily last Friday and return to his hometown Cairo, to avoid lengthy court proceedings and a possible prison term for incitement.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it's before the end of this week," Bushra said. "I think our government really wants this to move quickly."

ICE spokeswoman Lori Haley confirmed that Elsayed was still in custody awaiting repatriation.

Elsayed arrived in the US in September 2015, to enroll in a flight school near Los Angeles.

Following his post, the US government revoked his student visa and ordered the flight school to expel him, which it did.

In return for leaving the country, Bushra said the US Attorney for Southern California would not be bringing criminal charges against him.

Trump has incurred anger from Muslim Americans - as well as many Muslims worldwide - for controversial comments he made last year, in which he vowed to stop all Muslim immigration to the US for an indefinite period if elected president.
