A senior Iranian Commander, Major General Ataollah Salehi, on Thursday unveiled plans for an upgrade in the Islamic Republic’s missile program.

In what has become routine in recent weeks, the commander reiterated Iran does not care about possible sanctions over its ballistic missile program.

“Iran’s future missile program will become more precise and stronger, and these are the deterrent weapons that pose no threat to our neighbors and friends, but are against enemies,” Salehi told reporters in Tehran, according to the Tasnim news agency.

Asked about a possible resolution by the UN Security Council restricting Iran’s missile program, he said Iran will not be bound to comply with those possible resolutions and the Armed Forces will not care about them.

The United States recently announced sanctions on 11 entities and individuals connected to the Iranian missile program. The new sanctions came as other sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program were lifted.

The new American missile sanctions came after Iran conducted an Emad medium range ballistic missile test on October 10, and tested another ballistic missile a month later.

UN sanctions monitors confirmed the Emad rocket tested on October 10 is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, making it a violation of a UN Security Council resolution.

Iran claims its military might poses no threat to other countries and that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.

Salehi’s comments echo ones by Iranian officials who have stressed that Iran would not only stop its missile program because of the American sanctions, it would intensify the program.
