Two top officers in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) were killed while taking part in the bloody fighting in Syria, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported late Tuesday.

The two officers, named as Maj. Gen. Farshad Hasounizadeh and Brig. Hamid Mokhtarband, were said to have been killed on Monday while fighting Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists.

The Iranian news agency did not reveal where the two were fighting when they were killed.

Iran has already been sent reeling by the death of a senior commander in the elite Quds Force of the IRGC, General Hossein Hamedani, who was in charge of operations in Syria.

Hamedani was killed during fighting outside of Aleppo last Thursday.

Recently Iran has deployed thousands of its soldiers to Syria, as part of a massive ground offensive backed by Russian airstrikes against rebel forces, two senior regional officials told Reuters.

Iran and Russia have been the key backers propping up Bashar al-Assad's regime. Russian just this month began airstrikes which it claims target ISIS, even as Western sources reveal the overwhelming majority of the strikes target other rebel groups, including those backed by the West.
