Of all the ground forces arrayed against it, ISIS's most potent foes have proven to be Kurdish fighters - both from the Peshmerga of northern Iraq and the People's Protection Units (YPG) of northern Syria.

One of the key battlefronts between the Kurds and Islamic State jihadists is around the oil-rich city of Kirkuk in Iraq, recently retaken from ISIS by the Peshmerga, who were backed by US air strikes.

The video above, taken south of Kirkuk on April 12, captures the spectacular moment Peshmerga forces foiled an attempted truck-bombing of a checkpoint by ISIS - literally blowing it sky-high.

Kurdish fighters scored a direct hit on the truck, sending part of it hurtling into the air, where it detonated harmlessly - well, for everyone but its jihadi driver that is.
