Eight Palestinian residents of eastern Jerusalem were charged Monday with inciting terror attacks and promoting violence against Jewish citizens and security forces.

Arrested last Monday, the eight were detained the week before for "inciting hatred, violence and terrorism," mostly with messages and videos on the social media site Facebook.

The operation was the Israeli police's "biggest aimed at repressing this kind of incitement to violence on social networks and the Internet," a police spokesman said at the time of the arrests.

According to the indictment, filed by the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court, the eight Palestinians posted a long series of Facebook statuses in which they called on their friends to follow them in standing up against and objecting to Israel.

The posts were filled with praise for the numerous deadly terror attacks committed in recent months, particularly in Jerusalem, and called on other young Palestinians to go out and imitate such attacks.

One of the defendants posted a picture of himself holding an M16 assault rifle. The picture received a lot of support.

On the Facebook page of another was a post praising the assassination attempt on Temple Mount rights activist Yehuda Glick. Glick was shot outside the Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem a little less than two months ago.

"I hope he does not see the light of day and they kill him like a dog," wrote defendant Omar Tawfiq Hassan, several days after the attempt on Glick's life, as Glick remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Another defendant called on his followers not to "waste" their deaths, but to die as martyrs.

Several more defendants praised the actions of the Hamas-affiliated terrorists who kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teens in June, as well as Hamas actions during Operation Protective Edge.

Defendants also praised the rampage attacks that have killed several people in recent months.

"Zionist run away because you're about to get killed by a car. Look left, be careful, a car is approaching from all angles and will bring you to the grave," Ibrahim ben Samar Ibadeen wrote on his Facebook page.

The indictment also stated that since the events of last summer the District Attorney and Attorney General's office have decided to step up law enforcement against online incitement.

Prosecutors noted that they will work "against inciters from all walks of Israeli society."
